Thunder Road pronunciation

/THUN-der RODE/

Meaning

Thunder Road names the backroads and highways where bootleggers hauled white liquor at night, especially the corridor from Harlan, Kentucky, toward Knoxville through Maynardville. Modified cars thundered along with jars in the trunk and revenuers on their minds. Folks still call those old shine pipelines Thunder Road, and Highway 33 around Maynardville wears the nickname with pride.

How folks use it

  • “Granddaddy ran Thunder Road with a Ford full of jars and no headlights.”
  • “Maynardville's main drag still gets called Thunder Road around here.”

Origin and etymology

Named for the low rumble of souped-up runners on Appalachian whiskey routes. Robert Mitchum's 1958 film and ballad "Thunder Road" fixed the phrase in popular talk, drawing on real ATF files and East Tennessee crash lore. The roads were real before Hollywood showed up.

Frequently asked questions

Is Thunder Road only the movie?

No. The movie borrowed a name mountain folks already used for moonshine routes.
