thumper pronunciation

/THUM-per/

Meaning

A thumper is something that packs a wallop. In redneck talk that often means a heavy rifle or shotgun that kicks hard when you pull the trigger. Folks also use it for any big, thumping piece of gear. In moonshine country, thumper is also the second keg on a still, named for the putt-putt sound steam makes running through it.

How folks use it

  • “He took that old thumper deer hunting and knocked the buck flat.”
  • “Don't stand too close when that thumper goes off. It'll bruise your shoulder.”

Origin and etymology

From thump, the sound of a heavy hit. Gun talk borrows it for hard-kicking rifles and big loads. Separately, Appalachian moonshiners named the thump keg or thumper for the barrel that doubles the whiskey and thumps while vapor bubbles through. Same root sound, two rural jobs.

Frequently asked questions
