you'uns pronunciation

/YOO-unz / YUNZ/

Meaning

Talking to more than one person, or to somebody and their people. Are you'uns coming to supper? Same job as y'all, but this is the mountain and Midland form built from you ones. Pittsburgh yinz is a close kin with a tighter sound. Deep South leans y'all. Hills and hollers lean you'uns.

How folks use it

  • “Are you'uns staying for supper?”
  • “You'uns better get off that ridge before dark.”

Origin and etymology

From you ones, carried by Scots-Irish settlement into the Midland and Appalachia. DARE marks you-uns chiefly Midland: western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, western North Carolina, and on into the Ozarks. Yinz is the Pittsburgh shortening of the same pronoun.

Frequently asked questions

Is you'uns the same as y'all?

Same meaning: plural you. Different neighborhoods. Y'all owns most of the Deep South. You'uns (and yinz) own more of Appalachia and the Midland.
