thisaway pronunciation
/THIS-uh-way/
Meaning
Mountain and Southern talk for this way. Hold it thisaway. The truck turned down thisaway. Pairs with thataway for over that way and yonder for farther off. The little uh sound stuck between this and way is part of the spoken form, not a stutter.
How folks use it
- “Hold it thisaway while I tighten that bolt.”
- “I saw some old truck turn down thisaway.”
Origin and etymology
Alteration of this way with an extra vowel in the middle (epenthesis). American Heritage notes thisaway and thataway as chiefly Southern and Midland. Smoky Mountain English lists thisaway as a locative adverb meaning this way, right beside thataway and yonder.
