the interstate pronunciation

/the IN-ter-state/

Meaning

In Southern and Appalachian talk, this is the plain name for the controlled-access interstate highway. Folks do not call it a freeway or expressway much. You take the interstate when you want speed, and you leave it for the two-lane when you want the back way home. Cousin phrase is "the four-lane," which can mean any divided highway, interstate or not.

How folks use it

  • “We'll take the interstate to Nashville — it's faster than the old road.”
  • “Once you get off the interstate, watch for deer.”

Origin and etymology

Named for the U.S. Interstate Highway System built from the 1950s on. Rural Southern speech stuck with the literal label instead of regional nicknames like freeway (West) or expressway. Directions often contrast it with the two-lane or the four-lane.

Frequently asked questions

Is the interstate the same as the four-lane?

Not always. The interstate is the federal system. The four-lane can be any divided road with four lanes, including a state highway.
