jackleg pronunciation
/JAK-leg/
Meaning
Jackleg names the worker who is not really qualified and the sloppy job they leave behind. A jackleg mechanic, electrician, carpenter, lawyer, or preacher. You hire them cheap, then you fix what they fixed. Can also mean makeshift or a little crooked. Said with a warning more than a compliment.
How folks use it
- “Don't let that jackleg mechanic touch the transmission.”
- “Looks like a jackleg repair to me. It won't hold.”
Origin and etymology
Chiefly Southern and South Midland American English from the 1800s. Texas writing already talked about jack-leg lawyers, preachers, and doctors. May echo blackleg. Exact roots are murky, but the insult stuck hard in rural Southern talk.
Frequently asked questions
Can jackleg describe the work, not just the person?
Yes. A jackleg repair means the job itself looks half-done or unsafe.
