howdy pronunciation

/HOW-dee/

Meaning

Casual greeting you toss at a neighbor, a cashier, or somebody walking the fence line. It started as a real question about how you were doing, but nobody expects a health report now. Just a warm nod in word form. Strong in Southern and Western rural talk, Texas especially, and still common across redneck country.

How folks use it

  • “Howdy, stranger. You lost or just hungry?”
  • “He tipped his hat and said howdy like he'd known us for years.”

Origin and etymology

Contraction of "how do ye?" or "how do you do," an old English health check. Spellings like howedye show up by the late 1500s, with modern howdy solid by the 1700s. Southerners and Westerners kept it as everyday hello long after city speech moved on to hi.
