hoptoad pronunciation
/HOP-tohd/
Meaning
Hoptoad is just a toad, said the old rural way. Kids and grandparents still use it for the warty little hopper by the porch light or under the water trough. Same animal as toad. The hop- in front makes it sound like something you might step on in the dark and swear about.
How folks use it
- “There was a hoptoad sittin' under the porch light again.”
- “Don't mash that hoptoad; he eats the bugs.”
Origin and etymology
American English compound from the 1820s: hop plus toad, named for how the animal moves. Dictionaries mark it strongest in the Northeast historically, but rural Southern and Appalachian speakers kept it in everyday porch talk and kids' stories. Also spelled hop-toad or hoppy-toad.
