dadburn pronunciation
/DAD-burn/
Meaning
Dadburn is a soft stand-in for goddamn. You hear dadburn it when the wrench slips, the truck won't start, or somebody tracks mud in again. Southern and mountain folks use it as a safe cuss around kids and preachers. It also works as an adjective: that dadburn gate, this dadburn heat. Same family as dadgum, dadblasted, and dadblame.
How folks use it
- “Dadburn it, I just fixed that fence yesterday.”
- “This dadburn humidity'll melt you before noon.”
Origin and etymology
American minced oath from the 1800s. Dad stands in for God in a line of soft curses (dadgum, dadblast, dadburn). Dialect notes from Arkansas, Alabama, and Texas list dad burn among everyday mild imprecations. Exact first speaker is unknown; the pattern is older euphemism talk that stuck hard in rural Southern speech.
Frequently asked questions
Is dadburn a real swear word?
It's a softened one. Strong enough to show you're peeved, mild enough most grandmas will let it slide.
