catched pronunciation

/KATCHT/

Meaning

Catched is how a lot of mountain and rural Southern speakers say what schoolbooks write as caught. You catched a fish, catched a cold, or got catched in the rain. It is not a kid inventing grammar. It is the regular -ed past form that stuck in Appalachian English alongside the irregular caught.

How folks use it

  • “We catched some minnows for bait before daylight.”
  • “I didn't want to get catched in that storm with no shelter.”

Origin and etymology

English has used catched since at least the 1500s, before caught won out in standard writing. In the South and South Midland, dialect surveys found catched common well into the 1900s, especially in West Virginia and North Carolina mountain talk. Smoky Mountain English lists both catched and caught as everyday forms.

Frequently asked questions

Is catched wrong?

Not in the dialect that uses it. Standard English prefers caught. Mountain speech kept the older regular past form, and folks still say it with a straight face.
