catch pronunciation
/KATCH/
Meaning
In everyday redneck talk, catch means you got the point or heard the words over the truck radio, the lawnmower, or a mumbled porch sentence. If you didn't catch it, you say so and make them repeat it. Same idea as get it, just the working-class verb folks reach for first.
How folks use it
- “I didn't catch that. Say it again.”
- “You catch what he meant about the fence line?”
Origin and etymology
English has used catch for grasping a meaning since at least Shakespeare's time. Catch on showed up later in the 1800s. Rural Southern speech kept the short form in daily talk: Did you catch that? remains common across the South and Appalachia, not as fancy slang so much as plain speech.
Frequently asked questions
Does catch only mean understand?
No. Folks still catch fish, catch a cold, and catch hell. In this sense it just means you heard or understood the talk.
