turnt pronunciation

/TURNT/

Meaning

If somebody is turnt, the volume is up. Could mean hyped for a ball game, dancing in a truck bed, or deep into a cooler of beer. Rural kids use it the same way as city kids, just with gravel under their boots. Older mountain speech also has turnt as a plain past tense of turned, which is a different animal.

How folks use it

  • “That bonfire got turnt once the band started.”
  • “He was too turnt to drive home, so he slept it off in the cab.”

Origin and etymology

From African American English turn up, as in turn up the heat or volume. Turnt spells the past form. The wild-party sense spread nationwide in the 2000s and landed in Southern rural talk through music, school, and phones. Separate older dialect turnt just means turned.

Frequently asked questions

Is turnt the same as turned?

Not when it means wild or drunk. Older Southern speech does use turnt for turned, like he turnt the light off. Party turnt is a different sense.
