squoosh pronunciation
/skwoosh/
Meaning
Playful country talk for pressing something till it gives. You squoosh a bug, squoosh mud between your toes, or squoosh bread dough flat. Same neighborhood as squish and squash, just with that stretchy oo sound. Kids and grown folks both use it when the action is messy more than official.
How folks use it
- “Don't squoosh those tomatoes in the grocery bag.”
- “He squooshed the biscuit flat and poured gravy on it.”
Origin and etymology
Imitative informal English, a variant of squash or squish. American Heritage lists it as informal for squash or squeeze. The form with oo shows up in the first half of the 1900s. Not invented in the South, but it fits right into redneck kitchen and creek-bank talk where soft wet things get mashed.
