scallywag pronunciation
/SKAL-ee-wag/
Meaning
A scallywag is somebody up to no good in a half-charming way: a kid stealing cookies, a cousin who stretches the truth, a neighbor who borrows tools and forgets. Southern mouths still use it for mischievous folks. History also loaded scalawag as a hard insult for white Southerners who backed Reconstruction Republicans, but porch talk today usually means rascal, not politics.
How folks use it
- “That little scallywag hid my truck keys again.”
- “Don't trust that scallywag with the change jar.”

American slang by the 1840s for a disreputable or worthless fellow, origin uncertain. After the Civil War, scalawag became a Southern political slur. The everyday mischievous sense kept going in family talk. Spellings vary: scallywag, scalawag, scallawag.
