hempine pronunciation
/HEM-pine/
Meaning
In Southern Appalachian talk, especially around the Smokies, hempine means the eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis). Tall evergreen with short needles and drooping tips. Loggers and old residents used the name for the big trees in the hollows. Bark tea was a home remedy. It has nothing to do with hemp the crop.
How folks use it
- “Them hempine down in the bottom are three, four foot through.”
- “Granddaddy said hempine bark made a bitter tea if you were feeling poorly.”
Origin and etymology
Documented in the Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English / Smoky Mountain English as a local name for eastern hemlock. Cataloochee histories note hemlock was known locally as hempine. Likely a folk blend of hemlock and pine, since the tree looks pine-like to casual eyes. Also heard as spruce pine in some hollers.
Frequently asked questions
Is hempine related to marijuana or industrial hemp?
No. It is a tree name for hemlock. The soundalike is a coincidence.
