hawgging pronunciation

/HAWG-in/

Meaning

Hawgging is hogging said the Southern way. Somebody who is hawgging the biscuits, the remote, or the conversation is grabbing more than they ought to. The picture comes straight off the farm: hogs crowding the trough and not leaving any for the rest. Mama still uses it as a scold at the supper table.

How folks use it

  • “Quit hawgging all the gravy and pass the bowl.”
  • “He's been hawgging the four-wheeler since breakfast and nobody else has got a turn.”

Origin and etymology

From hog, the farm animal, with the Southern vowel that makes hog sound like hawg. The verb "to hog" meaning take more than your share goes back to the 1700s in English. Appalachian and Southern speech just kept the farm sound in the spelling hawgging or hawggin'.

Frequently asked questions

Does hawgging mean hunting hogs?

Usually no. Hawgging means monopolizing something. Folks still call wild pigs hawgs when they hunt them, but that outing is hog hunting, not hawgging the biscuits.
