haul back pronunciation
/HAWL bak/
Meaning
In Appalachian talk, haul back means you draw yourself up and set to go, usually right before a punch, a throw, or some other sudden move. It is the wind-up, not the trip home. You hear it most in stories about somebody who hauled back and hit, butted, or otherwise lit into the other party.
How folks use it
- “He hauled back and knocked that boy flat.”
- “She hauled back with that skillet before anybody could talk sense into her.”
Origin and etymology
Documented in Southern Appalachian English as a verb phrase meaning to ready yourself before the next action. Close kin to haul off. The image is pulling your body back so you can put force into what comes next. Not the logging haulback line, and not simply "return."
Frequently asked questions
Does haul back mean to return something?
