frogged pronunciation
/FROGGD/
Meaning
Past tense talk for a successful frog hunt. In redneck country that often means frog gigging: light in the eyes, multi-pronged gig, warm night on a pond or creek. Boys come home and say they frogged till midnight, meaning the cooler got heavy with bullfrogs headed for the skillet.
How folks use it
- “We frogged that pond till midnight and filled a five-gallon bucket.”
- “Daddy said he frogged these same banks when he was a kid.”
Origin and etymology
From the verb frog / frogging, hunting frogs for food. OED records frogging back to the mid-1600s. In the rural South the common method is gigging with a barbed spear at night. NPR and local stories still follow Tennessee and Arkansas crews on those summer ponds.
