ever which way pronunciation
/EV-ur witch way/
Meaning
Things flying, running, or lying all over the place with no neat order. Kids tearing around the yard, papers blowing off the truck bed, tools dumped out of a toolbox. Southern and Appalachian form of "every which way," with the first syllable shortened to "ever."
How folks use it
- “After that gust hit, the feed sacks blew ever which way across the lot.”
- “Those grandkids were runnin' ever which way till suppertime.”
Origin and etymology
Comes from older English "every which way" (in whatever direction). In Southern and Midland speech the unstressed "y" often drops, so you get "ever which way." The Dictionary of American Regional English recorded it widely; written Southern talk shows it by the 1800s.
