In southwest Virginia and nearby northeast Tennessee, a dip dog is a hot dog dipped in batter and fried, usually eaten with mustard and maybe onion rings. Locals will tell you not to call it a plain corn dog. The name stuck hard around Marion, Virginia, where the Dip Dog Stand has been frying them since the 1950s.

How folks use it

  • “After the ballgame we grabbed dip dogs and ate them in the truck.”

Origin and etymology

Tied to the Dip Dog Stand on U.S. 11 near Marion, Virginia, opened by Lester Brown in 1957. The name spread through Smyth County and into northeast Tennessee roadside talk. Outside that stretch of Appalachia, folks mostly say corn dog.
