dang it! pronunciation

/DANG it/

Meaning

Dang it is everyday frustration without the church-pew heat of damn it. Redneck and rural Southern mouths use it for stubbed toes, dead batteries, and burnt supper. Softer cousin to dadgummit, just as handy around kids and company.

How folks use it

  • “Dang it! Spilled coffee all over the truck seat.”
  • “Dang it, I left the gate open again.”

Origin and etymology

Dang started as an 1700s English stand-in for damn. Rural American speech, including Southern and Appalachian talk, kept dang and dang it as safe porch cussing. Exact first "dang it" print is early 1800s territory, but the soft-oath habit is older.
