clomp pronunciation

/KLOMP/

Meaning

The sound of somebody stomping through the house like their feet weigh fifty pounds. Work boots on a wooden porch, kids coming in muddy from the barn, Daddy headed to the fridge after dark. If you can hear every step, they're clomping.

How folks use it

  • “Don't clomp through the living room with those muddy boots on.”
  • “I heard him clomp across the porch before he even knocked.”

Origin and etymology

Clomp showed up in English around 1829 meaning to walk as if in clogs. It's probably echoic (the sound is the word) or a cousin of clump. American dialect surveys list clomping among the common answers for walking heavy and loud.
