ackenpucky pronunciation

Meaning
A catchall for goo you don't trust or can't identify. In West Virginia talk it often means a food mix of unknown ingredients, or something jellylike on the plate. Elsewhere the same family of spellings covers paste, sludge, pipe-thread gunk, and any sticky mess that needs a funny label.
How folks use it
- “What's in that casserole? Looks like ackenpucky to me.”
- “Wipe that ackenpucky off the wrench before you lose your grip.”
Origin and etymology
Etymology unknown. Dictionary of American Regional English lists ackempucky (and many spellings: ackenpucky, ackumpucky, uckempucky, and more) for sticky pasty stuff, with food senses noted in West Virginia by the 1920s–40s. A 1934 Kansas citation already uses "ackumpucky" for sealing wax. Nobody has pinned down a neat root, so the playful sound is half the point.
Frequently asked questions
Is ackenpucky only about food?
No. Food is a big West Virginia sense, but people also use it for wallpaper paste, pipe gunk, sludge, and other sticky messes.
